How To Clean Dab Pen Coils Easily
Dab pen coils are disposable, and most of us simply throw them away and replace them with a new one. However, there regular cleaning can help extend the life of your dab pen coil and keep it functioning at an optimum level. Here’s how you can clean your dab pen coils easily, and you can even do it while watching your favorite movie on Netflix.

Materials needed:

For cleaning your atomizer, you’re going to need:

  • 95%-99% isopropyl alcohol

  • Q-tips, preferably with both blunt and sharp tips

  • Wipes or paper towels

  • Hot water

  • Containers to hold your atomizers

  • Dab pen tool

  • Ziplock bag or a clean ceramic/glass bowl

For non-alcohol cleaning

  • Electric stove

  • Baking pan

  • Aluminum foil

  • Potholder

Before we begin, let’s take a look at your atomizer. What is your atomizer made of? Check your instruction book for material specifications. Generally, you can use isopropyl alcohol for cleaning glass, ceramic, quartz, stainless steel, and titanium parts. If you have a wicked atomizer (which is very rare nowadays), soaking is not advisable.

Does your atomizer have coils like the Dr. Dabber Ghost? Or does it have a ceramic donut or a coilless atomizer like the Atmos Kiln? These two have different cleaning techniques because of the presence or absence of the coils, respectively. We’ll talk about how to clean each type of atomizer to keep from damaging your coils.

Cleaning coiled atomizers

Cleaning coiled atomizers need a bit of care because these coils are very delicate and can easily break. Just like when you load your dab pen, you have to avoid touching the coils because you can damage them. The best way to clean these types of atomizers is to either soak them in iso alcohol or place them over the stove.

Alcohol soak:

Now, as long as your atomizer is made of solid materials that won’t react or destruct in alcohol, you can do this method. Just a reminder: this method isn't recommended on wicked atomizers. The wick is going to absorb the alcohol, which is highly flammable.

  1. Get your Ziploc bag or glass/ceramic bowl and place your atomizer inside.

  2. Add enough alcohol to submerge the atomizer fully.

  3. If you’re using a Ziploc bag, hold the atomizer firmly and shake the bag to force the alcohol through the coils. Don’t put anything else with the atomizer to prevent damaging the coils.

  4. Soak the atomizer for 15-20 minutes to melt the residue. Don’t soak the atomizer any longer or you’ll risk damaging the finish.

  5. Take the atomizer out and place them on paper towels to dry.

  6. Once all the alcohol evaporates, connect the coil to the battery.

  7. Run the coil for a couple of cycles on high temperature to burn off any alcohol residue. Don't do this if your atomizer is still wet.

Non-alcohol cleaning

  1. Take out the atomizer from the battery and remove the mouthpiece.

  2. Cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil and place it on the stove.

  3. Turn on the stove and set it between 1 and 2. This is high enough to melt the residue without burning or ruining your coils.

  4. Place the atomizer coil side down on the surface of the aluminum foil and leave it there for 5 minutes or so.

  5. Use a potholder to lift the atomizer from the pan. Check the coil and put it back on a clean spot for another 5 minutes of heating.

  6. Your atomizer should be relatively clean at this point. If you still have residue on the coils, attach it to the battery and set it to the highest temperature.

  7. Hold the dab pen upside down and do a burnoff for 10-15 seconds to melt the residue. Do this twice then remove the atomizer from the battery.

  8. Put it back on the pan, coil side down to take out every last bit of residue.

  9. You’ll see all the residue melt, and it’s going to go down the sides. You can use the thin edge of a paper towel to take out that residue; be careful not to disturb the coils.

Cleaning coilless atomizers

  1. Unscrew the mouthpiece and the atomizer from the battery. Check how dirty the parts are to know if there’s a need for regular or deep cleaning.

  2. Use your dab pen tool to scrap out large left-over concentrates from your dab pen coil. These can be used for later if you wish.

  3. Take a Q-tip and moisten it with alcohol until it’s moist but not dripping wet.

  4. Wipe around the inside of the atomizer to get it cleaned. Use the sharp tip of your cotton swab to reach between the small crevices.

  5. Keep wiping until you got the entire residue out.

  6. Have wipes moistened in iso alcohol and wipe around the threading of both the battery and the atomizer. Just to make sure you don’t have any residue that can potentially leak to the battery.

  7. Let the dab pen coil dry and attach it to the battery. Cycle the dab pen a couple of times to help the alcohol evaporate completely.

Deep cleaning coilless atomizers:

Do the same cleaning method for the coiled atomizers if you want a really clean, almost-good-as-new look on your atomizer.

General cleaning tips for your coils:

  • Your dab pen coil needs cleaning once you see several signs such as poor performance, burnt flavor, and inconsistent vaping delivery.

  • Do regular and light cleaning on your atomizer every day to keep it squeaky clean. Do deep cleaning once every week or two weeks, depending on how heavy you use your dab pen.

  • Don’t forget to clean the mouthpiece while you’re cleaning the coils. There is some residue trapped beneath the mouthpiece that can interfere with the airflow. This can lead to draw resistance which can interfere with your dabbing experience. Place the mouthpiece in a Ziploc bag, submerge it in alcohol and shake it. You can use Q-tips to remove any stubborn left-over residue from the soak, then rinse thoroughly under running warm water.

  • Wipe the atomizer with a Q-tip soaked in alcohol daily or after each use to keep it clean. This will lessen the need for deep cleaning, and you can use the dab pen coil longer.

Why do you need to clean dab pen coils

There are a few yet really significant reasons why you need to clean your dab pen coil:

  1. You appreciate the flavors of your concentrates better.

  2. You won’t get any hint of burnt flavor, which you will get once there’s stuck-on resin inside the coils.

  3. Help keep your dab pen coils running longer, saving you cost on coil replacement.

  4. You protect your battery from leaks.

  5. You lessen the stress on the battery because your pen won’t have to heat up too much to vaporize your concentrate.

  6. Your coils will continue to vaporize your concentrates efficiently, saving you money on concentrates.

We hope these tips will help you maintain your dab pen coils. Cleaning is easy to do, and you don’t have to spend too much time doing so.
