Dab Rig vs Bong: Pros and Cons

A dab rig and a bong almost have the same function and features when it comes to recreational smoking. However, there are subtle differences that an avid smoker must spot. Let’s narrow them down a bit and highlight the pros and cons of each one.

What are you using?

Dab rig uses legal concentrates such as oil, wax, or honey. Dabs give you huge hits with just a small amount. Manufacturers are making it their mission to make these concentrates higher and higher in potency. You don’t need much to get what you want out of your rig.

Bongs use dry herbs, leaves, or flowers. Although breeders are also making potent cross-breeds for better flavor and hit, they cannot go as high as that of concentrates. This means compared to a dab rig, that you may need to consume more or do big rips in order to get the effect that you want.

Consumption method

Dab rigs work through the action of vaporization. The concentrates are vaporized on a nail, which you need to heat up to a specific temperature. Bongs work through combustion as you burn your herbs. If you look closely, dab rigs have cleaner water compared to bongs. You don’t need to filter much of the combusted products with dabs.

Method of use

Your bong can be converted to a dab rig by using a nail. However, you’ll be needing a torch or an electric rig to heat up the nail to vaporize your concentrates. Should you run out of fuel or power supply, you have to go out and buy fuel or wait for an available power source.

A bong needs a bowl and a lighter or a wick. Pack the bowl, use your lighter or wick to light up your herb, and you’re good to go. You don’t have to use any special equipment or set up to enjoy your smoking session with friends.

Dab rigs are smaller compared to bongs because you’re dealing with vapor. This means that the smoke should not travel far for you to get the best flavor and hit. This is okay for low-temperature dabs. However, small-sized dab rigs can be harsh if you are a fan of high-temperature dabbing.

Bongs are bigger because you need percolation to for cooler hits. The longer distance the smoke travels along with the number of percs the smoke goes through, the smoother the smoke will feel.

Because dab rigs vaporize smoke, you won’t be dealing with smell. Some are even able to use their portable electric dab rigs in apartments installed with smoke detectors. Bongs, because of combustion, leave the scent of flowers in the air as well as your clothes.

You can turn your bong into a dab rig, or your dab rig into a bong. The subtle differences can be noted as you use them. What’s your preference? Share your experience in the comment section!
