A gravity bong is a smoking device that can help you consume your herbs in one, massive hit. It’s made up of two containers, with one large enough for water and a smaller bottle to fit in. The materials can be made of plastic, or glass if you want to make something cleaner.

However, making your glass gravity bong requires specialized equipment such as glass cutters, clamps, and lathes. It also takes time to prepare. We’ll teach you how to make a homemade gravity bong using simple tools and materials that you can easily find in your home.

Materials for making the gravity bong

Here’s what you need to make a simple yet powerful smoking tool.

  • One 2-Liter water bottle and its bottle cap
  • A 1-gallon water bottle
  • Cutters
  • Scissors
  • Aluminum foil or steel mesh tea ball infuser
  • Large needle or unfolded paper clip

The size of this gravity bong is for big, serious rips. If you want something smaller, you can change the water bottles to a 1-liter and 2-liter respectively. Now, let’s go make your DIY gravity bong!

How to make a gravity bong

Before you begin, make sure that you have a wide, stable surface for creating your bong. You’re going to need force to cut the bottles.

  1. Get the bigger bottle and cut out the top, just below the shoulder.
  2. For the smaller bottle, cut out about an inch off from the bottom. Place the bottle inside the bigger one to check the height. Ideally, the lip of the inner bottle should be just an inch or two above the outer cylinder. Cut out a bit at a time to help conserve the bottle.
  3. Once you got the right height, you can get the other half of your steel mesh tea ball infuser as a bowl. If not, let’s prepare the cap.
  4. Take your cutter and score deep “X” at the middle of the cap. Get the scissors to widen the hole and create a gap.
  5. Take your aluminum foil and fold it to form a thick, full square. Place it on top of the cap and push it through the hole to create a bowl and then wrap it around the edge of the lid. If you don’t have a top, place the aluminum foil on the lip of your bottle and form an indentation inside the rim.
  6. Get your needle or paper clip and poke holes in the aluminum.
  7. Add water inside the big bottle until it reaches the neck of your inner bottle.
  8. Pack the herb on your makeshift aluminum bowl or the tea infuser.
  9. Insert the small bottle in your water vessel. Place your packed bowl or tea infuser on top of your small bottle.
  10. Get your lighter and fire up your herb. Lift the inner bottle slowly and watch your gravity bong milk your botanical. Don’t go too fast, or you’ll waste your herb. Don’t go too slow either to prevent your smoke from getting stale.
  11. Stop lifting before the bottle clears from the water.
  12. Take out the cap and place your mouth on the lip of the bottle. Push the gravity bong down and let it drive the smoke in your lungs.

What you should know about your DIY gravity bong

First things first, you should know how to use a gravity bong. Now that you’re done, let’s cover a few things that you have to know about homemade gravity bongs. They are inexpensive, and you can get the materials almost anywhere. However, make sure that you’re using clean, BPA free, food-grade materials. When you use non-food grade materials for your gravity bong, you expose yourself to harmful chemicals and toxins. Not only will that ruin the test of your expensive herbs. More importantly, this practice can land you to a hospital.

Don’t let all that massive amount of water fool you. A gravity bong gives seriously strong hits because of the lack of water filtration. Pulling from a bong is not the same as letting gravity drag the smoke down from the bowl. If you want to get some diffusion, you need to get a bubbler bowl, which is a 10-inch long pipe that reaches deep within the bong.

Use the gravity bong after you’ve experienced smoking a bong or a pipe. Beginners beware because the massive amount of smoke is too overwhelming for you to take in. Never take on the gravity bong unless you’re experienced smoking from other bulky smoking devices.

When you’re done smoking with your homemade gravity bong, throw all disposable pieces away. Do not reuse the bottles to prevent inhaling toxins, even if the material is BPA free.

One more important note is that a socket gravity bong takes a slightly different process.

Conclusion

Making a homemade gravity bong is easy, and it’s also fun to use. However, it has a limited lifespan because of the nature of the materials. If you want a long-lasting gravity bong, we highly recommend getting the Gravitron Glass Gravity Bong by GRAV. It’s made of an all-glass material for cleaner and safer smoking.
