Glycerin Coil: A Cool Pipe Accessory

Ice bongs are great because they can help cool down hits as smoke passes through the ice. There are some disadvantages, though, such as added weight, longer necks, and over spilling of the water chamber. You need to clear the water repeatedly, or you’ll be getting nasty splashback on your bong. This is where a glycerin coil comes in.

What is a glycerin coil?

The glycerin coil is a cylindrical glass attachment that has a spiral coil inside. Space inside the cylinder is filled with glycerin, a non-toxic fluid made up of fatty acids. It’s a common ingredient in cosmetics and some food items. The material can freeze quickly and stays colder longer than ice.

As a pipe attachment, the glycerin coil is removable, lessening the need for space in your freezer. Even if you bought a pipe like the Freeze Pipe Bubbler, you just need to put the coil in the freezer, nothing else.

Secure the coil with a keg clip to keep it in place.

How does it work?

After its time in the freezer, the walls and space of the coil is cooled down due to the glycerin suspension. As you pull from the pipe or a bong, smoke travels through the coil where it transfers its heat to the cooling system. The longer air path also cools the smoke further, and the constriction traps the debris from the smoke as well.

How to use a glycerin coil

A glycerin coil is relatively easy to use, and you can use it as often as you want as long as you have room in the freezer to pop it in.

  1. Place the glycerin coil inside the freezer for 2-4 hours, depending on the size of your coils. Bigger coils need longer freezing hours, while smaller ones rarely need overnight freezing.
  2. You know that your glycerin coil is ready for use when that bubble moves at a slow snail’s pace. Literally.
  3. Take out the coil and attach it to your bong or pipe. For glycerin bongs, you attach the coil right at the joint on top of the base.
  4. Secure the connection with the keg clip, and you’re ready to roll.

Maintaining your glycerin coil

To keep your glycerin coil working in tip-top shape, you need to clean it regularly. The slender coils are prone to clogs when you neglect to clean your coils. The usual 95% alcohol or stronger plus salt is will do the trick.

  1. Place the glycerin coil ina Ziploc bag and completely cover it with isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Add a good amount of salt, with the grains small enough to go through the coils, yet with the right coarseness to scrub the resin from the coils.
  3. Seal the bag and hold the coil as you shake it to allow the solution to pass through. Do this for 2-5 minutes, depending on how dirty your glycerin coil is.
  4. Leave the coil to soak for 15-30 minutes, or 4 hours to overnight to soften the debris.
  5. Shake the bag again to remove the dirt.
  6. Take out the coil and rinse it with warm running water. You may have to do the cleaning and rinsing several times until the coils are clean.
  7. If alcohol doesn’t flow through the coil, hold the coil upright with the joint end on your palm. Create a seal and pour your cleaning solution through the mouthpiece.
  8. Repeatedly release the vacuum in the coil by opening your hand until the coils are thoroughly clean.
  9. Dry the coil entirely before putting it back to the freezer for your next session.

Can I use this coil for cooling my dabs?

A glycerin coil is undoubtedly efficient in cooling down your hits. It’s so efficient, though, that it will only condense your dabs as it passes through the coils. What you’ll get is reclaim stuck within the coils and close to no vapor when you take a hit.

The glycerin coil is better for smoking flower since we’re not dealing with wax or oil turned to vapor. The smoke will remain in its gaseous state, so there’s no wastage on flower. If you prefer vaping, there are some dry herb vaporizers that you can attach to a glycerin bong for a cooler, smoother experience.

Using a glycerin coil transforms your smoking experience to a whole new level. Many love the way it cools down smoke, and it can also filter your hits. It can be a bit expensive, with a coil itself costing as much as a standard ice bong like the 14” Dark Vapor Straight Tube Bong.
