Residue and reclaim can accumulate and create a nasty layer of dirt build-up on your dab rig nail. It’s unsightly and dramatically affects the taste of your dabs. Here’s how to clean a dab rig nail so you get the true taste of your concentrates each time you use your dab rig.
Cleaning a titanium dab rig nail
You need a bit of elbow grease when you clean a titanium nail. You will need:
Mini scraping tool
Clamp or pliers
Dish scrubber or 800 grit sandpaper
Here’s how to clean your titanium nail after using it:
Keep the nail on your dab rig.
Torch it until all the left-over concentrate evaporates.
Here’s how to clean your titanium nail if you have thick build-up:
Grip your titanium nail with one hand and your scraper tool in your dominant hand.
Scrape out the blackened crust from the surface, giving special attention to the crevices.
If you want your titanium nail to be clean and smooth, run it under water as you scrub off the residue using sandpaper.
Dry off and season your titanium nail again before using.
Use fine grit sandpaper to prevent deep gauges and to preserve the thickness of your titanium nail. No matter how smooth the surface looks, titanium is still a porous material. Some will recommend soaking and treating it with alcohol. However, this can damage your nail and change the flavor of your dabs.
Cleaning a ceramic dab rig nail
Cleaning a ceramic nail should be done carefully. Ceramic is a fragile material, so you need to be careful of exposing your nail from thermal shock. For cleaning ceramic nails, you will need:
A metal scraper
Here’s how to clean a ceramic dab rig nail after use.
While the nail is still hot, gradually and steadily heat it until it glows red.
Turn the torch off and the left-over concentrate will evaporate on its own.
Here’s how to clean your ceramic dab rig nail if you have thick build-up.
Slowly and gradually heat up the nail until it glows red. Continue sweeping the torch over the surface until the residue turns gray and starts to crack.
You can start blowing the residue off the surface. The caked carbon will peel off bit by bit.
Do this slowly and carefully. Don’t overheat the ceramic dab rig nail or you will risk breaking it.
You can also speed up the process by using a metal scraper to remove the build-up.
Gradually let it the nail cool down to room temperature.
Cleaning a quartz dab rig nail
Just like ceramic, cleaning a quartz dab rig nail should be done carefully. Although it’s stronger and has more thermal resistance compared to ceramic, a quartz nail is still fragile and can break. It’s also susceptible to thermal shock. When it’s time to clean your ceramic nail, you will need:
90% Isopropyl alcohol
Double-tipped Q-tips (should have a round and as well as a rounded end)
Ziploc bag or a small container for soaking.
Here’s how to clean a quartz dab rig nail after use:
Get a dry Q-tip and wipe it around the quartz nail until you get all the left-over concentrates.
Torch the tip until the remaining concentrate vaporizes.
You can also clean the quartz tip after it cools. Get a Q-tip soaked in alcohol and wipe it around the nail until all the residue is gone.
Pulse torch it until you see vapor rise up.
If there’s build-up:
Place the quartz dab rig nail in a bowl or Ziploc bag.
Pour alcohol until the nail is submerged. Soak it overnight.
Take it out from the soaking solution and wipe the residue off using a Q-tip.
Another way is to torch the residue. Sweep the torch on the nail until the residue burns off and turns to ash.
Unlike the titanium and ceramic dab rig nails, a quartz nail will have that ashen mark forever. If you wish to keep your quartz nail look crystal clear for long, make it a habit to clean your dab rig nail after each use.
