Ice catchers inside water bongs significantly cool down smoke. This option is perfect for those who are looking for cooler hits yet dislike adding another layer of percolation in their bongs. If your bong is broken and you’re waiting for a replacement, you can easily make a homemade bong with ice catcher with simple materials.
Here’s what you need to get started:
Two plastic water bottles
5-6 inch long plastic tube (can be from a ball pen or PVC pipe) for the downstem.
A socket that will fit your plastic tube
Wire screen for the socket
Cutter or soldering iron
Preparing the ice catcher
Remove the bottom part of one of the bottles. Test the fit by placing it on top of the other one. The ice catcher’s lower end should touch the sides of the other bottle, but with enough space for the ice at the side of the water chamber’s bottleneck.
Remove the top of the same ice catcher so that you have enough room to put ice in it. Don’t make the hole on the top too big that you would have a hard time placing your mouth in and taking a drag.
Preparing the water chamber
Depending on the size of the water bottle, measure about 3-5 inches from the bottom and mark it.
Using a cutter or soldering iron, create a hole for the downstem. Use gloves if you’re using a soldering iron to prevent burning yourself.
Make sure that the hole is snug enough to fit your plastic pipe and it does not have any gaps.
If your bottle has a wide mouth, keep the cap on. Use the soldering iron to create holes on the cap. This will help prevent the ice from falling inside the chamber as it melts.

Preparing the downstem
Double check the length of the plastic tube. It should reach inside the water bottle with 2 inches extra external length.
Attach the metal socket to the plastic tube and place the wire screen inside it. Use the glue gun and duct tape to seal any air holes around the plastic tube and the socket.
Create slits or holes at the bottom to serve as a diffuser for your downstem.
Putting it all together
Insert the downstem inside the hole in the bottle.
Attach the ice catcher on the bottle.
Use the glue gun and duct tape to seal any air gaps
Put ice inside the top chamber.
Pack the bowl with your herb and light it up.
Since this is a DIY homemade bong with an ice catcher, make sure you clean all the parts thoroughly. Observe safety measures when handling hot and sharp tools.
Also, you should only use food-grade plastic bottles that are BPA free. Since the DIY bong is made of disposable materials, throw it out once you are done with your session. This is for a one-shot deal only. If you want repeated sessions with your bong, go for ones made out of quality borosilicate glass like the ones we have here at BigDaddySmoke.
