What is An Acrylic Bong and How to Use It?

Many are looking into acrylic bongs because they are affordable and durable. Let’s have a look at what it is, and why it’s popular in the smoking industry.

What is an acrylic bong?

An acrylic bong is made of a transparent plastic material. It has the same clarity and brilliance as glass. Acrylic is also two times lighter than glass, which makes an acrylic bong easier to carry and pass around with your friends.
Because acrylic is plastic in nature, it’s easy to fabricate and mold into shape. This is why an acrylic bong is also cheaper and easier to get compared to glass bongs. You often see one in novelty stores and gas stations, as well as any smoke shop as they are easier to mass-produce.

Your acrylic bong can come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. It can look like a regular scientific bong that comes in a straight tube, beaker, of bubble base. Other bongs like the one from Kayd Mayd are 3D printed and have an interesting geometric shape. Acrylic is easy to thermoform, which is using shaping the material while it’s hot. The result is a unique acrylic bong that has grip marks and interesting neck angles that makes using the bong comfortable and fun to use.

The most distinctive feature that an acrylic bong boasts about is its durability. It’s a bong suitable even for the clumsiest or rowdiest smoker around. You can tip it, topple, it, and the major damage you’ll get is the spill on your table or floor. You can take it with you for camping or traveling.

How to use an acrylic bong

Before using your acrylic bong, you need to check for a carb hole and a fixed bowl. Traditionally, using a bong means lifting the bowl off from the stem to release the smoke. For an acrylic bong, the bowl is fixed with a rubber o-Ring, there’s a different way of using the acrylic bong.

  1. Pour water through the mouthpiece to fill the water chamber. The water level should be enough that you submerge the tip of the downstem by 1.5 to 2 inches.
  2. Pack the bowl firmly but not too tightly. A densely packed bowl is hard to pull and won’t maintain the cherry. A loosely packed bowl burns herbs fast so you’ll be wasting your precious greens.
  3. Grip the acrylic bong with one hand and use your finger to cover the carb hole.
  4. Pull from the mouthpiece and get your lighter or wick to fire up the bowl.
  5. Gather as much smoke as you can until you got satisfying milk going on in the bong.
  6. Lift your finger from the carb hole to release the smoke. Inhale the smoke, hold it in for 2-3 seconds, then exhale.

If your acrylic bong does not have any carb hole or comes with a removable downstem:

  1. Fill the chamber until you cover 1.5 to 2 inches of the downstem with water.
  2. Pack the bowl firmly making sure the herb is secure but not too tight.
  3. Pull from the mouthpiece and use a wick or lighter to fire up your herb.
  4. Fill the acrylic bong with smoke until the milk is thick.
  5. Lift the bowl from the stem and inhale the smoke.
  6. Keep the smoke in for 2-3 seconds, then exhale.

Tips for using an acrylic bong

According to a few, depending on the quality of the material of the acrylic bong, there’s a plastic taste to the smoke. However, the taste can be minimal and will eventually wear off. Also, acrylic bongs provide harsh hits. Although the material is clear and transparent, it tends to hold in heat. As you continue on with your session, you’ll notice that the smoke gets hotter and harsher. However, this can be remedied by adding ice either inside the water chamber or utilizing the ice catcher to the fullest.

Another way that you can use an acrylic bong is to use a dry herb vaporizer like the Grasshopper Titanium Stealth Dry Herb Vape Pen. Since you’re vaporizing instead of burning herbs, your hits will stay cooler longer compared to using a regular bowl.

Acrylic bongs don’t have the same inertness as glass, which means resin can stick in the bong. It’s best to clean your acrylic bong after each session to keep it fresh for the next round.
